Who are the people in your neighbourhood?

Even though we see it on the news on a regular basis, most of us never expect to wake up one morning to find your neighbourhood wall to wall police cars. For people in the Lord Roberts area in Winnipeg, that was their reality last Friday morning.

Lord Roberts is a small area, sandwiched between Pembina Highway, a rail line, and the Red River. The houses are older, with many people undertaking small and large scale renovations. There is a community centre, with hockey rinks and a daycare. An elementary school is nearby, and in the summer you can hear the sounds of children playing in the streets. It's the site of one of the most popular Winnipeg attractions in the summer - the Bridge Drive In - where families stop for a quick ice cream treat from May to October. And all of these places and people are mere steps from where three police officers were ambushed. While many homes in the area already prominently display alarm stickers, I expect more will be cropping up over the next several weeks.

The sad thing, it's not the first time something like this has happened here. Three and a half years ago, there was a shooting on Churchill Drive. The victim was the brother of a gang member who had been charged with the murder of a member of another gang. It occurred a year to the day of that incident.

To those who are fighting to keep the gun registry alive, I'd like to ask, "Do you honestly believe that any of the guns used in these and similar incidents were registered?"
